Animistic Apparatus

Animistic Apparatus

SPONSORSHIP OF EVENT

Animistic Apparatus comprises a field-learning and skills exchange lab in Udon Thani, and a symposium and screening programme in Bangkok.

The curatorial lab in Udon Thani will experiment with artistic adaptations of the apparatus and infrastructure of film projection in ritual contexts. The team will invite an itinerant film projection troupe with self-taught skills in building its own hybrid digital-analogue film projection apparatus to teach a group of moving image artists based in Southeast Asia and beyond to use its hybrid tools to present artists’ moving image works with the gigantic-scaled screen and sound equipment of the itinerant film projection apparatus. Participating artists will be encouraged to engage creatively with non-gallery and non-theatrical conceptions of image and sound quality, cinematic duration, and cinematic experience of non-human presence.

As part of this process of field-learning and skills exchange, the lab’s participating artists, curators and projectionists will co-curate a performance experimenting with projecting contemporary artists’ moving images with itinerant cinematic apparatus shaped by animistic media infrastructure.

Preceding the lab, the team will organise a symposium in Bangkok exploring decentred genealogies of moving image projection in Asia, accompanied by a screening programme highlighting contemporary artistic practices of experimenting with moving image projection apparatuses.
