SEAFIC Seed Lab

SEAFIC Seed Lab

SEAFIC Seed Lab is a brand new lab concept which can be considered a precursor to the SEAFIC Script Lab proper. The lab seeks to identify five promising Southeast Asian short film directors who have not yet started working on their feature film projects – far different than the SEAFIC Script Lab, which requires full scripts in order to apply. These filmmakers shall then attend 2 lab sessions within 3 months, during which they will have a chance to work with the experts to explore and develop their directorial voices as well as develop their ideas into potential synopses and directors’ statements for their first features.

The idea for this lab came about due to the previous experience with some filmmakers in the SEAFIC Script Lab. Every year, we discover that some of our participants struggle with the writing process as they have not yet decided what they truly want to say with their projects. As such, the scriptwriting could not fully progress as the filmmakers  first had to do some soul-searching before they could continue, thus resulting in valuable lab time not being fully utilized. This is why we have the idea of separating this type of early development exercise for filmmakers into an earlier lab so that once they enter a script lab afterward, they would be able to fully devote themselves to writing.

Once they have completed Seed Lab, we hope that they will subsequently be ready to apply to the upcoming SEAFIC Script Lab or any other international script labs around the world.
