SPONSORSHIP OF EVENT

Laura Mulvey and the Concept of Male Gaze in 21th Century is an intellectual project that aims to not  only to create academic conversation but also to translate critical dialogues from scholars and experts in the field to the public, and encourages the public to think and act fairly on the productions of gender-related meanings on cinema. The project invites participants to revisit “male gaze”, the critical film concept developed by Laura Mulvey which explains how men’s ideological power and gender oppression can function through the moment where we gain sexual pleasure in film watching. Particularly it encourages participants to examine this concept within the context the contemporary societies of Thailand and Southeast Asia, in which many facets of lives are governed by the multiple-platform cinematic universe.  Run over the course of about one month at both Chiang Mai University in Chiang Mai and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, the project consists of film screenings, and seminars which will be led by Laura Mulvey herself and other local scholars. “Laura Mulvey and the Concept of Male Gaze in 21th Century” is funded by Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI), Purin Pictures and Media Arts and Design, Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University.
